Moving Tips

Never trust any moving company to package and transport anything you cannot replace with insurance. Trucks get stolen, have accidents and items aboard mysteriously disappear. Always get insurance, such as homeowner's insurance, before shipping anything valuable, and take important documents, computers and family heirlooms with you.

Helpful Storage Hints

  • Do not lean items against walls.
  • Leave air space around perimeter of the storage unit to aid ventilation.
  • Leave walkway to back of unit.
  • Use all space including height.
  • Disassemble items such as bed frames and tables.
  • Store mirrors, windows and screens on edge, not flat.
  • Do not use newspaper to wrap anything that could be damaged by ink stains.

Moving Books, Documents and Files

  • Pack books flat to protect spines.
  • Do not place boxes directly on the floor. Use pallets or skids to prevent moisture.
  • Use packing materials to fill in empty pockets in cartons

Moving Furniture

  • Place furniture on end on a pallet, cardboard mat or plastic sheet.
  • Disassemble beds and tables if possible and wrap table legs in paper. If pieces will not disassemble, place padding on the floor and place the table on its top with legs pointing up.
  • Use dresser tops for stacking cartons and dresser drawers for linens or small delicate items.
  • Most lightweight chairs should be stacked seat-to-seat.
  • Place a light dust cover over your furniture.

Moving Appliances

  • A refrigerator or freezer should be thoroughly dry and stored with its door slightly ajar.
  • Some items can be stored inside large appliances.
  • Cartons can be stacked on top of stoves, refrigerators and freezers.

Moving Bicycles, Tools and Metal Items

  • Wipe all metal surfaces with a rag containing a few drops of machine oil to retard rust.

Moving Fabric Items such as Bedding, Curtains, Clothing and Linens

  • Preferably, these items should be hung, or carefully folded and stored. Wardrobe style, cardboard cartons can also be used.

Moving Lamps

  • Wrap large lamps in padding.
  • Wrap smaller bases in padding and put in cartons.
  • Pack delicate lamp shades separately.

Moving Holiday Decorations

  • Save original cartons which contained delicate ornaments and repack with filler or newsprint.
  • Wrap strings of lights around cardboard before placing in a carton lined with packing paper.
